Business Learning – Your Education Didn’t Stop in College

The Pursuit Of Knowledge Is Never Ending, The Day You Stop Seeking Knowledge Is The Day You Stop Growing.    - Brandon Travis Ciaccio

Today knowledge has power. It controls access to opportunity and advancement.   -Peter Drucker

There are many key things that successful business people have in common. Drive, discipline, work ethic, vision to name a few. Often one quality that is rarely mentioned is their curiosity and thirst for knowledge. I have seen in countless interviews with leading entrepreneurs that they often are avid readers. Their education did not stop in school, but continues daily. The best books are constantly sought out to improve their knowledge and hopefully give them a business advantage.

You can never read enough books or articles on your given industry. There are also numerous business books on sales, marketing, and management that apply to many industries.

Get recommendations from other business associates. See what books helped them. You can get recommendations from Amazon. When you look up a book on Amazon, often there is a reference to similar books that other people purchased on the topic. Also if you read the book review, people may suggest a better book on that topic.

It is better if you search for the topic (or industry) you want to learn more about and then get suggestions. If you do a search for ‘good business books’, there are numerous links to lists of ones to read, here is an example:

Here are some recommendations of books universally considered classics –

Effective Executive – Peter Drucker (Management)

Good to Great – Jim Collins (Business Culture and Excellence)

Positioning – Al Ries, Jack Trout (Marketing)

See You at the Top - Zig Ziglar (Sales)

How to Win Friends and Influence People – Dale Carnegie (Character and Presentation)

If you do not have the time to read so many books, there are some really good shortcuts. There are books on tape, or now CD or MP3 downloads. You can listen in your car and make your commute more productive. You can easily go thru a book a week that way.

If you still enjoy reading books, but time is limited, Amazon often has summaries of books that are cheaper and faster to read. There entire websites dedicated to executive summaries of books that can be downloaded and usually the monthly subscription cost is very reasonable, especially given the knowledge and time saving.

YouTube is a great outlet for information on books. Enter the author and book into their browser and it is not uncommon to find a one hour talk given by the author summarizing the key points of their book. A lot of times if you do a search of a particular book and enter ‘summary’ (or pdf’) after the book title you will get a summarized version of the book in an article, slide show or pdf to learn the main takeaways.

“Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.”
Albert Einstein

Good Luck with your education.
